Sealing concrete benchtops · Perth
Keep a concrete benchtop stain free.
A cast concrete benchtop is one of our best fits. We seal it with JUMBOGUARD MineralProtect: the one and only next-generation mineral sol-gel surface coating in Australia. Nothing else works quite like it. It bonds into the concrete itself, colourless, so oil, coffee and wine sit on top and lift in cleaning instead of soaking in.
What goes wrong with a concrete benchtop
A concrete benchtop is beautiful, and it is thirsty.
Cast concrete has real character, but it is porous, and a benchtop lives its whole life getting spilled on. In a Perth kitchen it fails in ways owners recognise the moment you name them, and the coating it usually comes with is part of the problem.
It drinks oil, coffee and wine
Cooking oil, olive oil, coffee, red wine and turmeric go straight into the face of raw or under-sealed concrete, where they darken and set into a ring you cannot wipe away. Oil is the mark a benchtop gets, and it is the mark a water-only sealer does nothing about.
Acid leaves a dull mark
Lemon, vinegar, wine and a lot of kitchen cleaners are acidic, and cement reacts with acid. Left sitting, an acidic spill can etch a dull spot into the top. It is the one attack no benchtop sealer stops, so the honest play is to make the surface shed fast and give you time to wipe.
The usual finish wears off
Concrete benchtops are often finished with a topical film or a wax. It looks good for a season, then scratches under knives, dulls where you work, marks under a hot pan and clouds around the sink. When a film fails, it has to be stripped and the top reground, so every redo costs more than the last.
Water rings and dull patches
Around the sink, the tap and the coffee machine, standing water leaves rings and the surface goes flat and patchy in the spots that get used most. A benchtop that started as a feature ends up looking tired exactly where you look at it.
How we protect it
Not on the concrete. In it.
For decades there were only two ways to seal concrete: lay a film on top, or soak a repellent down into the pores. Both wear out under the daily life of a benchtop, so you refinish again and again. MineralProtect is a third way. It is a water-based mineral sol-gel that bonds into the surface as a thin inorganic network, right where the bench is used.
It bonds into the concrete
Concrete is a mineral, cement-bound surface, so it carries the surface chemistry our coating grafts onto. The sol-gel bonds into the surface as it cures, so there is no film sitting on top to scratch or peel, and nothing loose to wear off under a cloth.
It protects where you work
The protection lives at the surface, exactly where the knife, the cloth, the cleaner and the oil meet the bench. A penetrating sealer builds its protection down in the pore, below the wear zone, where none of that daily use actually reaches.
It stays colourless
MineralProtect changes the surface energy, not the look. Your concrete keeps the same colour, finish and feel. It does not lay down the dark, wet-look film some sealers give you, so the bench you chose is the bench you keep.
The real edge
Built for how a benchtop is actually used.
A benchtop is not a lab sample. It gets wiped, scrubbed, cut on, splashed with cleaner and hit with oil every single day, and an alfresco bench gets the sun on top of all that. Every one of those loads acts at the surface, which is exactly where our coating sits and where a pore sealer is not.
Cleaning and wear
Survives the daily wipe and scrub
The coating is a dense inorganic network right at the surface, so it keeps working through the wiping, the scrubbing and the cream cleanser that wear ordinary benchtop finishes off. It fades slowly and predictably, and when it is due it renews with a top-up rather than a strip and regrind.
Chemical
Designed for cleaning, not just water
The inorganic surface stays stable through the routine kitchen cleaners and alkaline detergents real maintenance uses, the same exposure that breaks a pore sealer down from inside the concrete. It is more resistant, not immune, so we still keep neat acids and harsh strippers off it.
Oil and grease
Oil lifts instead of soaking in
This is the big one on a benchtop. Cooking oil, olive oil, greasy fingers and coffee sit on the surface and lift in cleaning instead of setting into the concrete. A standard penetrating sealer repels water only, so it leaves the face wide open to the exact thing that stains a bench.
Sun, for an outdoor bench
Does not yellow or chalk
Alfresco and outdoor kitchen benches bake in the Perth sun. Because our coating is inorganic, it does not yellow or chalk the way an organic film does out there. It is far more UV-resistant than a film, though not UV-proof and not permanent.
Proven, not promised
One price. One seal.
We prepare the concrete properly, apply the coating to spec, and register it. No guesswork on the day, no upsell on the finish. The chemistry behind JUMBOGUARD is tested at independent houses, so what you are getting is proven, not just claimed.
- Colourless. Same colour, same finish, same feel. It only changes how water and oil behave on the surface.
- No strip to renew. It degrades slowly with no hidden failure point, and tops up over itself when it is due, rather than being ground back and refinished.
- Independently tested. The coating chemistry is tested at recognised independent laboratories and registered under a 10-year guarantee.
The seal, working
The proof is on the surface.
Drag to compare: a MineralProtect-sealed surface, dry and wet. Water beads and rolls off instead of soaking into the face. That is the seal doing its job, and it is exactly how oil and coffee behave on a sealed benchtop. The colour does not change, only how the surface behaves.

Where we will tell you straight
What a seal on concrete cannot do.
A concrete benchtop is a strong fit for our coating, but a good sealer is honest about its limits. Here is where we will not oversell you.
It will not stop acid etching
An acid like lemon, vinegar, wine or a harsh cleaner left sitting on concrete can still etch a dull mark, because etching is the acid attacking the cement itself and nothing sealed into the surface prevents that. What the seal does is slow how fast a spill soaks in, so you get time to wipe it before it does its worst. Glass is the one surface where a coating genuinely prevents etching.
It is not a chopping board or a hot pad
It is a thin protective coating, not armour, so a board and a trivet still earn their keep. It will not stop a knife scoring the concrete or a very hot pan marking it. What it does beat is a topical film or wax, which scratches and wears far more easily. Concrete also hairline-crazes as it ages, and no surface coating glues that back together.
It is not permanent or maintenance-free
It is a long-lasting treatment, not a forever fix. The beading you can see fades before the protection does, so a surface that has stopped beading is a prompt to check it, not proof it has failed. It lasts years and tops up without stripping, and every seal is registered under a 10-year guarantee.
Concrete benchtops, answered
The questions we actually get.
Does sealing change the look of my concrete benchtop?
No. Our coating is colourless and non-pigmenting, so your benchtop keeps the same colour, finish and feel. The only thing that changes is that water and oil stop gripping the surface. If you are chasing that dark, wet-look concrete finish, that comes from a topical enhancer film, which is a different product with different trade-offs, and we will be straight with you about which one you actually want.
Will it stop oil, coffee and wine from staining my benchtop?
This is where the coating earns its keep on a benchtop. Oil, olive oil, coffee, red wine and turmeric sit on the surface and lift in cleaning instead of soaking into the concrete and setting into a ring. A standard penetrating sealer repels water only, so it leaves the face open to the very things that mark a benchtop. The one honest limit is acid: an acid left sitting can still etch, which we cover below.
Is it suitable for a food-prep benchtop?
The coating cures to a colourless, inorganic surface with nothing sitting on top of the concrete. For a food-prep benchtop we confirm the right product and let it fully cure before you use the bench. If you want the specific documentation that applies to the product we would use on your benchtop, ask us and we will provide it.
Can I cut on it or put a hot pan down?
Treat it like any good benchtop: use a board and a trivet. Our coating is a thin protective layer, not armour, so it will not stop a knife scoring the concrete or a very hot pan marking it. What it does beat is a topical film or wax, which scratches and wears far more easily. Concrete also hairline-crazes as it ages, and no surface coating glues that back together.
Does it stop lemon or vinegar etching the concrete?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Lemon, vinegar, wine and harsh cleaners are acidic, and acid attacks the cement itself, so nothing sealed into the surface can prevent it. What the seal does is slow how fast a spill soaks in, so you get a window to wipe it up before it does its worst. Glass is the one surface where a coating genuinely prevents etching, which is what GlassProtect is for.
How long does it last, and what does it cost to seal a concrete benchtop?
The penetrating and film sealers in common use are typically redone every year or two in WA conditions. Ours is built to last years, and when it is eventually due it tops up over itself with no stripping back. Sealing is $16 per square metre all-in with a $950 minimum, which suits most single benchtops, and you get a confirmed price before you book. That covers preparation, the coating and registration under the 10-year guarantee.
