How to get rid of efflorescence on pavers

That white, powdery, sometimes crusty bloom on new paving is not dirt, and it is not a stain you scrub out once. It is salt, carried up from inside the pavers by water and left on the face when the water dries off. Here is what it actually is, how to remove it without making it worse, and why the shed acid people reach for is usually the wrong first move.

The short answer

It is salt riding water to the surface.

Efflorescence is a deposit of soluble salts that were sitting inside the paver all along. Water moving through the material, rain, groundwater, reticulation, or the water used when the pavers were laid, dissolves those salts and carries them up. When the surface dries, the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind as a white bloom on the face. It is the same salts-riding-water mechanism whichever paver you have, which is why the fix is about managing water, not scrubbing harder. Get that idea and everything else on this page follows.

What it is

A salt deposit

A white to greyish powder or crust that reaches across broad areas, not one spot. Brush a dry patch and it lifts as dust. It fades when the paver is wet and returns as it dries, and it comes back after rain.

Why new pavers most

Fresh cement

Concrete and cement-bound pavers are the worst for it, because the cement itself is a salt source. New paving is loaded with build moisture and free salts, so it blooms hardest in its first months while it dries and cures out.

What it is not

Not dirt or mould

It is not grime you wash off, not green mould, and not a surface stain. It is a mineral deposit from within. Treating it like dirt, and hitting it with acid, is exactly how people turn a passing bloom into a lasting problem.

The point to hold onto: efflorescence is water carrying salt out of the paver. You cannot scrub the supply away, because it is inside. The whole game is removing what is on top gently, then slowing the water that keeps bringing more.

How to remove it

Start dry and gentle, in this order.

The instinct is to blast it or dissolve it. Both usually backfire. The reliable way is the patient way: take off what is loose, let the weather do the heavy lifting, and only escalate carefully if you have to.

Let it dry, then dry-brush it off

Wait for a dry spell, then sweep the loose bloom off with a stiff dry broom. Much of a fresh efflorescence is loose powder that lifts straight off. Do not wet it first: water just redissolves the salt and drives it back into the paver, ready to bloom again on the next dry day.

Let clean rain weather the rest out

On new pavers, the smartest move is often to do very little. The salt is soluble, so over the first months clean rain slowly leaches the reserve out and the bloom fades on its own as the paving dries and cures. Brush off each new flush and it gets lighter each time. Patience beats chemicals here more often than people expect.

Only then, a careful remover, matched to the paver

For a stubborn, crusted bloom, a purpose-made efflorescence remover can help, used sparingly, on a test area first, and rinsed thoroughly. One hard rule: on natural carbonate stone pavers like limestone and travertine, keep acids off entirely, because acid dissolves the stone and trades a white bloom for a permanent dull etch. The trap, and where a seal fits

Never seal salt under a film.

Two mistakes turn efflorescence from a nuisance into damage: fighting it with water and force, and sealing over it with the wrong kind of coating. Both trap the salt instead of managing it.

Wet scrubbing and pressure washing feed it

Flooding it with a hose and a brush dissolves the bloom and drives the salt back inside, where the next dry spell pushes it out again. A pressure washer goes further: it opens the pores of the paver so it soaks up even more water afterwards, and throws out more salt. Force aimed at the surface never reaches the cause.

A film-former traps the salt underneath

This is the big one. Lay an acrylic or wet-look topcoat over paving that is still carrying salt and moisture, and you seal the problem in. The salt crystallises under the film and lifts the surface off in flakes, while trapped moisture blushes the coating milky. That failing, peeling look is the film, not the paver.

A breathable coating cuts the water that feeds it

Once the bloom has run its course and the paving is clean, dry and cured, a breathable coating helps by starving the mechanism. It anchors into the surface, sheds water off the top and stays open to vapour, so far less water soaks in to dissolve and carry salt up, and the paver can still dry out. Less water in means less salt to the surface, without ever trapping what is there.

Why breathable protection has to live at the surface

The honest limit

A seal manages it. It does not switch it off.

On new paving the bloom usually keeps coming until the build moisture has dried out and the reserve is spent, seal or no seal, which is exactly why you deal with the efflorescence first and coat afterwards. What a breathable coating genuinely does is slow how fast fresh water loads the paver and keep any deposit sitting on the surface where cleaning reaches it, so the bloom becomes less frequent and lifts far more easily, without a film to trap the salt underneath.
